About the Project
New Prosperity Devon (NPD) is a social enterprise that was formed in 2019 through Transition Exeter’s economics working group.
NPD has been helping to generate a fairer and more sustainable local economy in Devon. It has run events and training opportunities, shared good practice, created connections, and sparked initiatives that provide for both people and the environment. It has also developed an extensive Knowledge Hub of resources, which we have copied across to its new home on the Transition Exeter website.
Our Aim:
- To promote sustainable economic development in Devon
The Story So Far

New Prosperity Devon has been devoted to catalysing conversations and partnerships promoting an inclusive and sustainable kind of economic development for Devon, carrying out projects, and providing research and consultancy to other institutions.
- NPD has been running seminars and lectures on Community Wealth Building, supporting local authorities and other place based institutions in using their spending to promote their own social and environmental goals
- NPD has also been supporting local councils in developing their response to the climate and ecological emergencies.
- Experience of institutions like public services, local authorities, NHS bodies, schools colleges and universities was reflected in the NPD report ‘Investing in our place’, Summer 2020.
- In 2022-23 New Prosperity Devon undertook part of the Support Social Enterprise programme co-ordinated by the School for Social Entrepreneurs, Dartington. Read the report ‘Social Value through Public Sector Spending – the Role of the Social Economy’, 2023.
- Some of the NPD webinars are available on its YouTube channel. There are many more resources on the Knowledge Hub.
NPD is part of the Devon Doughnut Collective. This seeks to design metrics for Devon to measure progress against the concept of staying within planetary boundaries and providing a basic social foundation according to the Sustainable Development goals – a safe operating space for humanity. Kate Raworth describes the concept and tool in her book ‘Doughnut Economics’ and in this short video. Overall, the tool aims to ‘Measure what matters’.
